Turtle house opening

I captured the turtle coming out of the house for the morning. Several othes gathered to watch as well. The lower rails make it easier for the kids to see.

Turtle or tortoise?

If it is swimming it is a turtle.  The tortois stays out of the water.  Here is the long answer.

Kid friendly zoo, easy on the parents

San Diego Zoo attracts lots of families. Many families living in San Diego buy an annual membership and enjoy the zoo often, a great time and wonderful bargain. These pictures show some families near the Children’s Zoo entrance. Keepers bring out the miniture horses for a walk in the morning. Get to the zoo when it opens at 9am and take the kids over to that area.

Turtle, tortoise, and terrapin: what’s the difference?

All turtles, tortoises, and terrapins are reptiles, have scales, lay eggs and are ectothermic.  So what is difference?  Turtles, like those pictured below, spend most of their time in water.  Tortoises live mostly on land and terrapins live both in water and on land.  

These three beautiful turtles live in the Japanese Friendship Garden pond at the San Diego Zoo.
