Possible Canary Island Date Palm in San Diego

My neighbor has this beautiful date palm in the front yard.  I have searched with Google and decided it may be a Canary Island Date Palm, also called a Pineapple Palm or officially the phoenix canariensis.   Can anyone confirm my guess?

  1. Sorry, I can’t help you with that, we don’t have any palm trees where I live, but this is a beauty!

  2. Your correct on both names. We have one that’s 65 years old and it’s one of the tallest ones that I have seen in our area. They grow better in your area. But the Triangle Palm, Neodypsis decaryi just behind it is the real gem.

  3. Yes it is a Phoenix canariensis.
And I too caught the Neodypsis in the background!!! that is a truly beautiful palm specimen.

There are other palms mistaken for canariensis… but more rare.
Ph. sylvestris is one. as well as Ph. theophrastii. also rare in cultivation… although i have seen them.
