Many people like to compare gorillas with humans, our closest relative. They can stand upright but prefer to walk using their hands as well as their legs. Our arms are much shorter. Do they have a sense of humor? Watching them at the zoo I would say no. But I have no doubt there is serious intelligence and much thinking going on.

  2. Hey, just fyi all of the gorillas at the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park are actually western lowland gorillas, which are smaller and less rare than mountain gorillas. There is even some literature that diggers that the zoo’s first two gorillas, Mbongo and Ngagi, were actualy just really big lowland gorillas (I can’t remember if they were eastern or western).

    {Thanks Nicole, I have updated the blog entry and greatly appreciate your input. SD(CA), Aug 24, 2011}
