TBM-3E “Avenger”

Filed under: Places to visit — washaw @ 6:00 am

_flying4

The “Avenger” first appeared in 1939 and was produced throughout WWII as the standard torpedo bomber. It had a top speed of 300 MPH, a range of 1,000 miles, an internal weapons bay, a 2000-lb payload, and a ceiling of 30,000 feet. The TBM-3E had had a crew of 3 or 4 and included the RT-5/APS-4 search radar, which operated at 3-cm wavelength, in an outboard pod on the right wing. By war’s end a total of 9,836 avengers were produced.

The pictured Avenger, on display at the Flying Leathernect Museum, MCAS Miramar, was accepted by the US Navy on 16 June 1945 and did not see combat. It was retired in 1962 after spending its career with various training units in the Navy and accumulating a total of 792 hours.

Sombreros

Filed under: Places to visit — washaw @ 6:00 am

Go to Ponce’s for Mexican food in Kensington. It’s been around since 1969 serving up no-frills Mexican food at good prices, a local favorite. While standing just inside the door waiting to be seated look up to your right on the wall. Sombreros come in many splendid straw woven designs and a chin string to hold the hat in place. They were designed so wide to provide a big shade from the very sunny climate of Mexico. Sombrero come from the word meaning shade in Spanish.

Old Town

Filed under: Places to visit — Tags: — washaw @ 6:00 am

Old Town San Diego contains more than 150 shops, several good restaurants, museums, and historical sites within an easy walking area. Old Town, the Birthplace of California, is just a short walk from the San Diego Trolley Transit Center and a short drive from most San Diego destinations. Recommended.

San Diego State

Filed under: Places to visit — washaw @ 6:00 am

The campus of San Diego State University is about a mile from where I live. SDSU has about 27,000 students getting 23,000 applications each year and accepting about 7,500. Tuition cost is about $3,500 per year for California residents.

This pedestrian bridge sits over College Avenue connecting Aztec Center to the East Campus Residential Community and parking structures. The bridge makes it much safer for students traveling to campus. The suspension-like span is approximately 230-feet long and 45-feet tall.

Lake Jennings offers a place to get away from the city, relax and enjoy nature. Fishermen old and young enjoy the opportunity to catch and release from the new stock added weekly. The lake also offers camping and is a great place for walking and birdwatching.
