Siamese Fireback

I took this picture walking to my assigned location as a volunteer at the San Diego Zoo. Today is my one year anniversary as a “red shirt” volunteer. This is a pair of Siamese Fireback taken as I walked down the “Tiger Trail”. What a wonderful place to visit and work. The San Diego Zoo.

Birch Aquarium “Sea Dragons”

Unlike most seahorses Weedy Sea Dragons do not have a prehensile tail so they are not able to anchor. These seahorses move very slowly in the water. Males carry the eggs, give birth to them and then both parents take care of the kids. They are native to Australia and endangered.

Manchurian Brown Bear
Before turning the bears out into their enclose we got a look behind the scenes. My wife and I were told to stay behind the white line for our own safety. That bear did look a little hungry. The old doors are going to be replaced with ones that are better for both seeing the bears and to help the keepers with training them. Most of the animals at the zoo are trained to come over and lean against the door. This helps with give the animal injections of medicine, much better than having to put them to sleep.

What’s in the box

Enrichment is what they all it at the San Diego Zoo. Put something inside the bears enclosure to give them a new experience each morning. Breaks the routine and provides some entertainment both for the bears and for visitors. This grizzly is working hard to get the little treats inside this box to fall out.

My camera is the size of a bar of soap. Got it at Christmas, a new Canon SD990IS. Love it because it fits in my pocket and it is always with me. But some days I wish for a larger camera like the one shown here. Oh, and that is a grizzly bear at the San Diego Zoo.

lawn bunny
San Diego has a shortage of water. Our lawns may have to adapt to the harsh conditions of the natural environment. The neighborhood rabbits that eat the grass may need to find other means of support. Our cayote that help control the bunny population may get lean. But be assured, I will continue to find a way to have a bath daily.
